We make you freely welcome…

Even the chipmunk and the bees welcomed us to Canterbury Shaker Village today for the third day of Shaker Seminar.   We had breakfast at the Great Stone Dwelling at Enfield Shaker Village, then drove to Canterbury where after a delightful lunch, we were split into groups and either explored on our own, toured an exhibit [...]

Shaker Spring Forum

I sit typing in a room used since 1857 as a spiritual meeting place by the Shakers of this community.  How fascinating to sit in the middle of this room using wireless and a laptop in a space once used to observe one’s spiritual beliefs.  I sit and imagine how odd it feels and wonder [...]

Shaker Seminar 2008 – Day Four

July 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Shaker, Site Seeing, travel

: Our day started with a two hour bus ride to Sodus Bay to see what is left of a community that resided there for a short time — staying (I think I have this right) about 10 years starting in 1826. There are only three original buildings left on the site — the land [...]

Shaker Seminar – Day 1

July 23rd, 2008 · No Comments · Itinerary, Shaker, Site Seeing, travel

Today we enjoyed breakfast at our B&B – The Phoenix Inn – and then made our way to the Fenimore Art Museum. There was a fascinating exhibit of Jewish immigrant wood carvers of the early 20th century in New York showing their work both of carousel horses and Torah arks for synagogues: fascinating. And an [...]

July 20th, 2008 · No Comments · Itinerary, Site Seeing, travel

Tomorrow morning we leave on a road trip for a week.  We’ll take the first couple of days to visit a couple of homes of the rich and famous: Naumkeag for instance.  By Wednesday we’ll be in Clinton, NY at the annual Shaker Seminar taking place this year at Hamilton College. I’ll post as I [...]

Happy Birthday America!

July 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments · My Goals, Site Seeing

Just a brief note between hamburgers to say Happy Birthday to the country we live in!  On our travels we met some really interesting people who were always interested in the US, the people, and our opinions of world events.  On several occasions, people asked if we would like to talk about our country’s politics, [...]

Let’s do the numbers…

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments · Itinerary, Sabbatical trip, Site Seeing, travel

We’ve been home for over a week now, yet we’re still adjusting in many ways. We seem to be back on the right time zone, which thanks to the ocean crossing really went pretty easily. We arrived only about 2 – 3 hours off. We still seem to want to eat different amounts of food [...]

The Queen Mary 2 takes us home!

Sorry to be out of touch for so long! We boarded the Queen Mary 2 on June 2 and we haven’t been able to connect (they did have internet but at 50 cents a minute). This morning we watched the sun rise over the Statute of Liberty as we arrived in NY . We are [...]

England

We had a great train ride through the Chunnel from Paris to London. It’s actually a rather “boring” ride in terms of the scenery (and at least 1/2 hour is spent in the tunnel). We enjoyed first class and were served a nice luncheon type meal while enjoying cozy seats. I was worried about my [...]

Paris, still

May 26th, 2008 · No Comments · Itinerary, Sabbatical trip, Site Seeing, travel

We are currently sitting in the Gare du Nord train station waiting for our train to London in a hour or so. There’s a nice lounge for first class travelers (which we’re doing for comfort and the meal!) with connection. So here’s just a few pictures from our few days in Paris. From London, this [...]
