Merlin speaks of learning…

October 30th, 2013 · 1 Comment · Musings, Quote of the Week, Reading, Teaching & Learning

“The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

Merlin certainly hit the nail on the head.

My husband passed away five years ago and my reaction, once I could focus, was to learn. First about everything I could get my hands on regarding grief and then my curiosity began to reawaken and I found myself craving new information on a variety of subjects. I even researched and learned to play the mountain dulcimer. It was almost as if the act of acquiring knowledge became a white (T.H.) noise that allowed me to continue without obsessing about the changes in my life. My mind craved/s activity and is happiest when its energy is not self centered but branches out into this wide wonderful world. I am so glad I found this site via Road Scholar.
