Birthdays

September 23rd, 2009 · eating, family, Musings, photo of the week

This is a photo of a cake my daughter made for her daughter’s third birthday which we celebrated just 3 days ago.  I’m posting here to celebrate another birthday as well – to my hubbie of 37 years.  I was with him at his 21st birthday and here we still are!  Life is deeply appreciated by me today.

happybirthdaycake09By the way, the cake is absolutely delicious.  When I get a link to it or have its recipe, I’ll share  (it’s someone’s gramma’s recipe from the Depression Era I believe.)

Time

September 21st, 2009 · family, Musings

I’m beginning to think a sign that one grows “old,” is a constant reflection on time!
“In one’s youth every person and every event appear
to be unique.  With age, one becomes much more aware
that similar events recur.  Later on, one is less often delighted or surprised, but also less disappointed.”

Albert Einstein, “Letter to Queen Elizabeth of Belgium”

Health care for children is a right

September 4th, 2009 · Children, Musings

not a privilege.   Although I’m not a fan of celebrity statements on political issues, I do appreciate when they use their ability to have media coverage, and they are well researched to make a statement.

Today I found a blog entry by one of the actresses of Desparate Housewives talking about the need for all children to have health care coverage.

I have to admit to being totally confused why our leaders need to debate whether we should cover all children.  Use all the cliches you can find:  they are our future, they are the leaders of tomorrow, etc. etc.   My Congress people seem to have no knowledge of this information.  Coverage for children is one of their rights; not a privilege.   Oh wait, maybe it’s because the US hasn’t ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children.

Or maybe the marketing industry needs to give a lesson to our government about the wealth of children?

Mother Memory

September 2nd, 2009 · Children, family, Musings, travel

I had a delightful visit with my daughter this past weekend; just the two of us with a little time at the end spent with the grandbaby when she came home from a trip with her father.    Each visit reminds me of how time passes, and yet how important it is to enjoy the present as well.   But for now, I’ll remember the fun of just the “four of us.”  Any guesses what year and where this was?

Beginnings

September 1st, 2009 · Musings, My Goals

“All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant’s revolving door.”

—  Albert Camus

Another school year begins for me today — and for so many more over the next few days.

I hope, as a teacher, that I support those who have struggled to get through their beginnings to the road that says:  “Here’s the path you were meaning to find.”   May those I teach this year have the strength to “Keep on Truckin'”
