Bonjour Francia!

May 9th, 2008 · Sabbatical trip, Uncategorized

We arrived last night from Figueres Spain to Nice France! It took about 7 hours total. We went Figueres to Montpellier, changed trains and then Montpellier to Nice. We had quite a moment when we went to track D and waited patiently only to have Rich observe that no-one else was on the platform. He dashed up the stairs to check in the station and discovered that it had changed to two platforms away. We are handy with these suitcases; but we sure flew up the elevator, across the station and down the other!

I’m in a small pasta place with wifi and may not be able to post any pictures as yet; but I hope to do that this week before we leave Nice on our river cruise.

Today has been quite a shock in terms of language though. After working so hard for 2 months to understand Spanish; we have to switch to French. That’s okay; since we taught ourselves the basic hello, thank you, etc.; it’s just that it was a shock to switch so quickly! But on the other hand, we are excited that what jumps to our mind quickly is the Spanish for many things! So we spent the day replying in Spanish, and then English!

But here we are at dinner – Pates’r Rus PastaBar at 4 ruelle de la Boucherie, Nice, and finally after the little French greeting, English comes to our minds! Very strange! Here in Nice, it’s actually not necessary to speak French as it seems all the restaurant and store folks speak English.

Already we are talking of home, knowing our adventure is treading toward the end. But we only spend a moment or two on it – still enjoying our break from the routine of life in the US! We are both spending time reflecting on our past life together (this summer marks 36 years together for us); and what we hope to achieve together and in terms of our family. We have one grandchild; and certainly hope for more – so we think about how to continue to make sure our children and grandchildren are always first in anything we do.

We really enjoy traveling – always have – and we enjoy most the time in one place to do the “back-door” thing.: find the local stores, the laundrymats, the fruit market, etc. (In fact, this afternoon we spent a hour or so doing our laundry in the old section of Nice!)

We are already talking about where in the world we might go for a month some summer soon and invite the children and grandchildren to come for a portion of it. And, of course, we are thinking it might be good to have it a Spanish speaking country!

Our best to everyone in the US!

Adios Espana!

May 7th, 2008 · Learning Spanish, Sabbatical trip, travel

We leave tomorrow morning for Nice France. It’s been a wonderful wonderful time here in Spain. We’ve learned a great deal, met wonderful people, and experienced not only another culture; but had time to reflect on the “culture” we live in.

We had a great day and a half in Cadaques! I’ll post more another time – now it’s time to get to bed as we have an early train to catch!

Adios Espana! Mi me gusta mucho todo Espana!

Dali…

May 5th, 2008 · Sabbatical trip, Site Seeing

Well, we spent yesterday – or at least half of the day – in the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres. It’s really quite difficult to explain – as all Dali pieces really are! It probably is one of those things in life that has to be seen to be believed!

Here’s a flavor of one room. This is a picture we took through a large magnifying glass (think huge serving size plate for size) standing on a platform about 9 feet off the ground on one side of the room (by the way, the glass was hung from the stomach of a huge dromedary). This is Dali’s tribute to (guess who!). To give you another idea of size, the lips are the size of a huge sofa.

He is buried in the next room that was too large to get in one shot with the camera. The best part is that the tombstone with his name, etc. is outside the bathrooms!

We are Dali fans, which lots of folks aren’t we know, but I really think this place explains a great deal about how he thought. We also feel that we enjoyed his work more having spent time in Spain and this area of Spain that was his home.

Tomorrow, we are going for a day and night to Cadaques – an hour bus ride from Figueres. There’s his home there – although we may not be able to get in since you need advance reservations, but we figure we’ll enjoy seeing the outside at least. (And, there’s a beach at the hotel!).

It’s unbelievable that we are down to our last days in Spain. On Thursday, we board the train for Nice France. Here in northern Spain where they speak Catalan, we’ve managed well with our Spanish. I’m nowhere near as fluent as I had hoped to be; but I have enough vocabulary to deal with stores, and trains, and hotels. And, most importantly, after years of working at Spanish part-time, I “get” how it works; and I think and hope that it really is now a matter of study and finding conversation partners at home so I don’t lose what I have and gain more vocabulary. As our Spanish teachers said: “Habla, habla, habla!”

Dali – land and Giants!

May 3rd, 2008 · Itinerary, Sabbatical trip, Site Seeing

Here we are in Figueres – as you can see we’ve changed a bit on our trip☺!

Oh, okay – it’s not really us! We arrived in Figueres – land of the famous Dali museum – this afternoon. We discovered it is another of Spain’s many saint days! And we lucked into a great fiesta! It was a parade of giants! If I can get a good connection, I’m going to look up more about it. We tried to ask a few folks; but no one we asked spoke English. They speak Catalan here – many speak Spanish – but I didn’t even manage to find anyone who spoke that for an explanation. We did see a few giants on display in Barcelona – and were very excited to actually see a parade.

Here’s a few pictures of the parade – these guys with really loud muskets were at the start (even the policeman had to plug his ears).

And a few of the giants! After the parade, we found the square they were all going to where there was a book sale as well.

We enjoyed Barcelona – especially because family came to visit – but on arriving to our hotel in Figueres; we realized how noisy, big, stinky, etc. it was! We can hear birds here and the air is lovely!!

Our last day in Barcelona, yesterday, we went on a great wine tour for the day. We were 2 of just 6 Americans with an expat tour guide. We went to a large winery – Torres – that actually has a branch in Napa Valley, CA; and two other small places. We tasted some wonderful wines and cavas (good thing our luggage was full or we’d have several bottles in it!

Tomorrow we hope to get into the famous Dali Museum — we have to get up early to get online for tickets!

Barcelona

A few pictures to whet your appetite for Barcelona. It is different in many ways from southern Spain – certainly more touristy, but more cosmopolitan and international as well.

img_7057.jpgFirst a couple of pictures of the beautiful narrow streets of the area we have been living in – Barri Gothic. Then a couple of pictures of Rich and I at the top of one of Gaudi’s buildings – his work is really amazing.

Then I had to put in a picture of one of the many faucets for water here in Barcelona – this one was occupied by a couple of pigeons having a mid-day bath.

The last one the interier of one of the lovely churches here.

Two weeks in Barcelona is quickly coming to an end – amazing! It’s been really challenging to get a posting up due to a lack of access to the Internet. Tonight we are for the second time having dinner at a great little restaurant called Gilda. They have great bar, food, and tapas. We ate here two nights ago; and I have kangaroo — yes, kangaroo!:)

Tonight I had duck – yummy!

Tomorrow we go on a day long wine tasting tour; and then on Saturday we leave via train for Figueres. We will spend May 3 to 11 making our way up the coast of Spain and lower France. We need to be in Nice by May 12. We have only reservations for a couple of days in Figueres — so it will be an interesting week ahead.
