Countdown begins

January 1st, 2008 · Uncategorized

44 days! At least the way I count! We leave February 14th – Valentine’s Day! We spent the good part of our New Year’s Day (it was snow storming outside and we had no reason to rush the shoveling duties) attacking our grand plan again. There’s really too much to do even in 4 months is the sad conclusion.

We are getting excited though. The itinerary at this point with lots of details to work out – including how soon to work out some of the details goes like this: Israel (10 days), Madrid (a few days), Granada for three weeks of Spanish language school immersion, Morocco (with son and his wife joining us for a vacation) for about a week, back to Salamanca for two more weeks of language school (somewhere in these weeks is a few days in Sevillas – maybe even Easter weekend). Next we’re onto Porto, Portugal for about a week, back to Barcelona and surrounds (1 week), Marseilles in France, maybe a driving tour of Alsace and into Paris for a few days, and lastly to London and Southampton to catch the Queen Mary home on June 2nd (and we have yet to figure out at what point our daughter and grandbaby join us for their vacation).

Are you tired yet from reading that? I am. It is a huge number of details to arrange. Let’s not talk about the cost with the dollar not so good in Europe. We have come, though, to really appreciate Rick Steves’ guidebooks and website.

And, let’s not yet think about the million details of caring for a home and business while we’re gone!

But let the countdown begin to one of the most fascinating years of my life! Happy New Year!

Endings and beginnings

December 21st, 2007 · Learning Spanish, My Goals, travel

Well, here we go! Although I need to go to campus for a couple of days in January to finish up some paperwork, clear off the desk (and to clean out the snack drawer – apologies to the mouse), and finish the end of semester grading, I am very close to being officially on sabbatical!

It is the beginning of an interesting time for me. I have the privilege and honor of having the resources to take some time from the day to day workings of a teaching job to spend larger amounts of time on all sorts of tasks for the next eight months. Some will be mundane, as those closets and file drawers in my home office will attest, others I hope will be more important to my teaching when I return. On the list of things I proposed to do is get more proficient at Spanish (well, okay let’s face it, just to say more than a few words!), and do some writing and reading in my field. So, spouse and I are embarking on a 5 week language immersion session in Spain as well as other visits to other countries (details to come) for a total of four of those months. We leave on February 14.

It is a bit of an ending as well. Each semester brings good-byes to my students, and the ending of specific times well spent together learning. Over the last few days, I’ve realized how much I will miss watching those students gain knowledge, and self-growth next semester. I’m hoping some of them will visit me via this blog on occasion.

This next week will bring the end of a calendar year as well as the beginning of a semester of adventures! Here’s to my own learning journey!
