Sunshine Needed

February 13th, 2008 · Sabbatical trip, Uncategorized

Less than 24 hours now before we depart on our trip!

Today’s New England weather is at its finest – 8 inches of snow and then 3 inches of downpour, flooding basement, icy steps and greyer out than an old cat. I’m glad it’s today though and not tomorrow. The weather report calls for a break of sun tomorrow, so we’ll hope that’s true.

But it means I have to leave behind a driveway and steps that are a mess of snow and ice. I’m sorry for the house-sitter; but I really should try not to worry as by June that snow and ice will be gone. But then again, it is New England!

We’ve pretty much finished our house chores, and the clothes luggage is just about ready to be zipped up. I think harder than packing light on the clothes end; it’s harder to decide what to carry for personal entertainment! We just need to pack up our carry-ons and copy important documents and that sort of thing.

There’s been more than one topic I’ve wanted to write abut the last few days, but I decided I’d wait until travel was under way to do some of that thinking.

So for now send your sunshine to Massachusetts and JFK airport tomorrow please!

Luggage and Sony e-book

February 11th, 2008 · Sabbatical trip, travel

Hubby and I had a great weekend of going out with friends to dinner and a museum; and generally picking up the house and a first go-around at packing.

We didn’t do badly the first time with stuffing everything we want to bring into the suitcases. I think we’re only a few items away from actually being able to take two of those small suitcases that business folk travel with that you don’t have to check. But, we’re not doing that! We are using one of those small suitcases, and the second is a medium size case. But the second larger one will be half empty. It can weigh up to 50 lbs in accordance with the TSA regs; but we’ve got it down to about 34 at the moment. I think it’ll be under 30 by the time we’re done, if not less. The idea is that we’ll be able to use the spare space to fill with those things we pick up along the way. I know that eventually in four months, we’re going to get tired of wearing the same 5 shirts; so we’ll buy a souvenir t-shirt, and such.

We also have a few things for our trip over with the Israel tour group that can eventually go into that large suitcase once we don’t need them in our carry-ons.

So, with just a couple of days left, the chore list is fairly short as well. We even have the e-book reader loaded and ready to go. Although some paper will go with us, this will enable us to cart a lot of our favorites! We are huge readers and this will definitely be part of how we’ll lessen our load. When we bought it, we got a 100 classics free, and there are several sites where you can download books for free. They might not be the newest and most popular, but great reading nonetheless. You can buy many of the recent books, but really not what we’ll do with the gadget. We’re been using it for a few weeks and we really like how it works.

The real count-down begins.

Birthdays, cake and more

February 9th, 2008 · Uncategorized

Today is my birthday: my daughter called to sing me Happy Birthday and grand-baby tried to join along doing a wonderful “Da-ba” shout in the background! Of course the bestest present is this trip – not intended to be a gift, of course, but it’ll do!

Here I am on my 8th birthday! oldbdsar.jpg The others in the picture are my father’s mother – Grandma Donlon – and his sister, my Aunt Alicia. My brother, Art is there as well. He would have been 4 in this picture. My grandmother and I shared the same birthday. She was a tough woman. I don’t know much about her really, other than she was as sweet as she was tough, and you never knew which she’d be! I don’t recall the year she died, I don’t think it was much after this as I know that in her last months, I would go to the Mother Ann home and play dolls with her as she thought she was a young girl.

Here’s to birthdays! I wish everyone many many more!

Dreams and Goals

February 8th, 2008 · My Goals, Sabbatical trip, travel

It’s at moments such as this that I begin to understand those who believe in being blessed by a Higher Power.

Hubby and I just returned from a meeting with our lawyer and accountant. We have assets that need protecting, and other people whose careers it is to know how to do that for us.

That seems mundane to many, especially those who I know will read my blog, but I’m reminded today that it isn’t so to me. I am from the “working class poor” I suppose it would be called. My father was eventually in my childhood a federal employee – worked in the motor pool at an arsenal. After the war (WWII) he drove trucks for bakeries until this job. He believed that women should stay home, and so my mother did. She raised 5 children. She was one of 12, so we had dozens of cousins and relatives in the area. My parents never bought a home and were always renters. His salary was $18,000 a year in the late 70s at the end of his career.

For many reasons — too many — to get through in this format; as a precocious child I have many memories of decisions I made before I was even 10 years old. I knew when I was 8 I was going to get a doctorate (my father made it through high school, my mother the 4th grade). I knew I had to get out of our community to learn more about other people. I knew I was going to travel (then I only knew you could travel the US though!).

And, here’s where I was going with this morning’s chores: I knew that I would be “rich” when I had a home with pretty things in it and that it would be still there when I died so that my children would have an “estate.” I do think, even with my training in early childhood, that this is an odd thing for an 8 year to make decisions about!

So today, I am blessed. I have the means and time to go study abroad. I started reading Dickens at 9 years old, so I’m pretty sure that some of my ideas of what rich people do and have come from the years I spent in childhood hiding from my real life in books! I have a home, and other material goods.

And, of course, I am richest in the love of family and friends. I have so enjoyed the last few days of seeing and hugging good friends who wish me the sincerest and sweetest “good travel.” And, today, as so many days, when I think of my life; I think the harder about what I can do to share it with others.

I think I might be about to have one of those adventures that I read about at 10 years old!

Lists: bucket or otherwise

February 6th, 2008 · Sabbatical trip, Uncategorized

Lists seem to be all the rage this week! This past Sunday, our favorite Sunday morning news show: CBS Sunday Morning (what else?) had a fun story about the popularity of list making in American society. Last night, hubby and I went to see the movie, The Bucket List, with two of our favorite actors. (By the way, you’ll find more than one curmudgeon review out there — this is a movie to enjoy for the sake of it, not to pull it apart as to how “possible” it is to do that much on their list!)

And, there is my list! It seems to get shorter in some ways: the redone will will be signed and filed on Friday, the bills are paid ahead that can be, the insurance documentation just about complete, not to mention the 10 page (yes, 10-page) booklet about the house for the housesitter (go ahead – stand in one room of your house and figure out all the quirks you need to tell someone else living temporarily in your home).

And, in others, the list gets longer. This one seems to be the small stuff: new battery for wristwatch, shoelaces, where’s the travel hairbrush? and such.

I realized that the most important things really don’t go on lists, do they? List of what isn’t on our lists: excitement, anxiety, anticipation, worry, wonder, thrill, sadness, and more feelings than I think words exist for (at least in English).
